Norway has announced the United Kingdom as its strategic partner for acquiring new frigates, opting for the Type 26 model, considered the largest defense investment ever made by the country. The first units are expected to be delivered to the Royal Norwegian Navy starting in 2030.

According to Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, the decision strengthens military cooperation between the two countries, following a recommendation from the Chief of the Armed Forces. France, Germany, and the United States were also contenders.

The vessels will have a configuration almost identical to those entering service in the Royal Navy, focusing on anti-submarine warfare and the ability to operate helicopters, manned or unmanned. According to Defense Minister Tore O. Sandvik, standardization will allow joint training and even crew exchanges between the two navies.

Beyond the military aspect, the agreement guarantees equivalent participation of the Norwegian industry in the total contract value, opening opportunities for domestic companies in maintenance services, upgrades, and other defense projects.

The announcement was made amid increased Russian submarine activity in the North Atlantic, with Oslo highlighting that the partnership will strengthen NATO’s capability to protect this strategic region.

The final investment decision will depend on negotiations with BAE Systems and approval by the Norwegian Parliament.
